Coinbase Free Crypto & Promos: What Still Exists in 2026

Short answer: The famous "Coinbase Earn" quizzes that paid free crypto (the old free $5, $10, XLM and BAT offers) ended on May 27, 2025. Coinbase may still run sign-up, referral or limited-time promotions, but amounts change and vary by country, so the only reliable place to see a real offer is inside the Coinbase app or on coinbase.com while signed in. Treat any "Coinbase promo code" or giveaway you find on social media, in a text or in a DM as a likely scam.

What happened to Coinbase Earn (Learn and Earn)?

For several years, Coinbase's learning rewards program let users watch short videos about a crypto project, answer a quiz, and receive a small amount of that project's token. That is where most "coinbase free crypto", "coinbase earn free crypto" and "free BAT / free XLM on Coinbase" searches come from. Stellar (XLM) and Basic Attention Token (BAT) were among the best-known campaigns.

Coinbase's own learning rewards FAQ states that the program ended on May 27, 2025. If a website or video in 2026 tells you how to "earn free crypto on Coinbase" through quizzes, it is out of date. Rewards you already received stay in your account as normal crypto.

Is there a Coinbase sign-up bonus or promo code today?

Coinbase has run new-user and referral promotions at various times, often with conditions such as completing identity verification and buying or trading a minimum amount within a set period. Because these offers change, differ by region, and are not guaranteed to exist at any given moment, we don't list a current amount. Here is how to check legitimately:

  1. Go to the source. Open the official Coinbase app (downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play) or type coinbase.com directly into your browser. Don't click promo links in ads, texts or social posts.
  2. Look for offers in your account. Active promotions, if any, typically appear as banners, in a rewards or offers area, or in the invite/referral section of your profile or settings.
  3. Read the terms before acting. Note any minimum purchase, deadline, eligible countries or states, and how the reward is paid. A purchase you make to unlock a bonus still carries normal Coinbase fees and spread.
  4. Confirm the reward arrived. Legitimate rewards show up in your Coinbase balance and transaction history. Coinbase does not need you to send crypto first in order to receive a bonus.

Referral (invite a friend) offers

If Coinbase is running a referral program in your region, your personal invite link is generated inside your account. The friend usually has to sign up through that link and meet the stated conditions. Terms and amounts are set by Coinbase and can change or end without notice, so read them in the app on the day you use them.

Staking rewards: "free" crypto that isn't really free

Staking is the closest thing to ongoing "earn" on Coinbase today. On proof-of-stake networks (Ethereum, Solana and others), Coinbase can stake your eligible coins on your behalf, and the network pays rewards that Coinbase passes along after taking a commission. A few points to understand before you treat this as free money:

Is Coinbase itself free to use?

Opening a Coinbase account and holding crypto in it costs nothing, and you can receive crypto from another Coinbase user by email or username without a fee. Buying, selling and converting are not free: simple trades include a spread built into the quoted price plus a fee, and Coinbase Advanced charges maker/taker fees. Coinbase One, the paid subscription, waives trading fees on eligible simple trades up to a plan limit, but the spread still applies. Full detail is on our Coinbase fees page, and how you fund the account affects cost too (see payment methods).

The old standalone Coinbase Pro was popular partly because its fees were lower; it shut down in late 2023 and its order book now lives inside the main app as Coinbase Advanced. More on that in Coinbase vs Coinbase Pro.

Small bonuses vs. the decision that actually matters

A sign-up bonus, if one exists, is a one-time few dollars. The far bigger driver of how your crypto experience turns out is when you buy and sell. Buying heavily near a market top can erase years of small rewards in a week. If you're new, read our guides on crypto market cycles and dollar-cost averaging before chasing promotions.

Worth doing

  • Checking the app for a genuine new-user or referral offer before you sign up
  • Reading staking terms and your state's eligibility before opting in
  • Keeping records of any rewards for tax time

Not worth doing

  • Buying a coin you didn't want just to unlock a small bonus
  • Using promo codes from social media, forums or texts
  • Trusting old "free $10 bitcoin" guides: those offers are over

FAQ

Does Coinbase still give free crypto?

Not through quizzes. The Learn and Earn learning rewards program ended on May 27, 2025. Coinbase may run other promotions, such as new-user or referral offers, which you can only verify inside your own account.

Is there a working Coinbase promo code?

Coinbase promotions are normally applied through official sign-up or invite links and in-app offers, not public codes. Codes circulating online are usually expired or part of a scam. Check the app or coinbase.com directly.

How do I earn free crypto on Coinbase now?

The main remaining option is staking eligible coins, which pays variable network rewards minus Coinbase's commission. It is not risk-free: the coin's price can fall, and staking isn't available in every state.

What happened to the Coinbase free $5 or $10 bitcoin offer?

Those were time-limited promotions from earlier years and are no longer running in that form. Any current sign-up offer, if available, will show its own terms in the app.

Are Coinbase rewards taxable?

In the US, staking and promotional rewards are generally treated as income when received. Coinbase says it issues Form 1099-MISC when rewards exceed $600, but smaller amounts are still reportable. This isn't tax advice.
