Coinbase Gift Cards: What Works, What Doesn't, and Scams to Avoid

Short answer: Coinbase has offered gift-related features in the past, but we could not confirm which ones are live today, so check the Coinbase app before relying on any. Prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift cards usually can't be added as a payment method because they aren't tied to a verified name and bank account. The simplest working way to "gift" crypto is to send it from your Coinbase account to another Coinbase user's email, which is instant and has no Coinbase fee. And anyone who asks you to pay them with gift cards or crypto is almost certainly a scammer.

Is there a "Coinbase gift card"?

Searches for "coinbase gift card", "buy coinbase gift card" and "coinbase gift card Walmart / Amazon" usually mean one of three different things:

Can you use a Visa gift card on Coinbase?

In most cases, no. Coinbase's supported payment methods are tied to your verified identity, such as a US bank account, an eligible debit card in your name, or other supported options listed in your account. Prepaid Visa and Mastercard gift cards are generally anonymous (no verified name or billing link), which is exactly what exchange anti-fraud and anti-money-laundering checks are designed to reject.

That is why questions like "how to add money to Coinbase using a Visa gift card" or "gift cards that work on Coinbase" rarely have a reliable answer. Workarounds you'll see on forums, such as registering a name on a prepaid card, may fail at the card-verification step or be declined later. Your account's Settings > Payment methods screen shows what you can actually add. For the full picture of funding options and their costs, see our Coinbase payment methods guide.

Can you buy bitcoin with a gift card?

Not directly on Coinbase, as far as we can verify. Some peer-to-peer platforms have historically let people trade gift cards for bitcoin, but that market is notorious for fraud and stolen cards, and well-known venues for it have shut down (LocalBitcoins, for example, closed in February 2023). If you want to buy bitcoin on Coinbase, follow our how to buy crypto on Coinbase guide using a bank or debit card.

The safe way to gift crypto on Coinbase

If both of you use Coinbase, sending crypto by email, phone or username is the cleanest gift:

  1. Buy or choose the crypto. Make sure it's in your Coinbase balance and available to send (bank-funded purchases can have a hold first).
  2. Tap Send. Choose the asset and amount.
  3. Enter the recipient's email, phone or Coinbase username. Double-check it.
  4. Confirm. Transfers between Coinbase users are off-chain, instant and carry no Coinbase fee.
  5. Tell them it's coming. If the email isn't linked to a Coinbase account, the recipient must claim it; unclaimed email sends return to you after 30 days.

Sending to an outside wallet address instead uses the blockchain and costs a network fee. Details are in our withdraw and send guide. If the person prefers to hold their own keys, our wallets hub explains custodial vs. self-custody.

A note before you gift crypto

Crypto is volatile. A $100 gift can be worth $60 or $150 a month later, and the recipient may owe tax when they eventually sell. In the US, gifts above the annual gift-tax exclusion can create a filing requirement for the giver. See our Coinbase taxes page and consider a tax professional for larger gifts.

Gift idea: teach timing, not just tokens

A small amount of crypto is a fun gift, but the lesson that lasts is how to avoid buying at the peak and panic-selling at the bottom, which is the most common way new investors lose money. Our guides on why people buy high and sell low and when to buy crypto are a good companion to any gift.
