Coinbase Alternatives: The Right Pick Depends on What You Want

Short answer: The best Coinbase alternative depends on why you're leaving. For lower trading fees, look at order-book exchanges such as Kraken Pro or Binance.US, or try Coinbase Advanced first. For the simplest app, Robinhood, Cash App or PayPal. For bitcoin only, Cash App. For a regulated US alternative with a similar feel, Kraken or Gemini. And if you want to hold your own keys, a self-custody wallet is the real alternative to any exchange. Availability varies by state.

First: are you sure you need to leave?

Most people search for a Coinbase alternative because the simple buy screen felt expensive. That screen includes a spread (commonly reported at around 0.5%, varying with market conditions) plus a fee. Coinbase's own Coinbase Advanced screen, the successor to GDAX and Coinbase Pro, has no spread and charges maker/taker fees instead, commonly reported at 0.40% maker / 0.60% taker at the lowest tier. Paying by bank (ACH) instead of card also helps. See our Coinbase fees guide before you move.

Lower fees

Order-book exchanges are where costs drop for regular buyers. Kraken Pro's tier-1 fees are 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker, falling with volume (its simpler app charges more, such as 1% on instant buys). Binance.US has promoted zero or low-fee spot trading on select pairs and restored USD bank deposits and withdrawals in February 2025. Gemini ActiveTrader's lowest-volume tier is 0.60% maker / 1.20% taker. Compare in detail: Kraken vs Coinbase, Binance vs Coinbase, Gemini vs Coinbase.

More coins

Coinbase already lists hundreds of assets and offers in-app DEX trading for many on-chain tokens. Offshore exchanges with bigger lists often don't serve the US; KuCoin, for example, agreed to exit the US in 2025 (see KuCoin vs Coinbase). Before chasing a token, read coins not on Coinbase.

Simplest app

Robinhood charges no commission on crypto and makes money in the spread (it discloses receiving rebates from market makers), and it lets you withdraw crypto to external wallets. Cash App and PayPal fold crypto into apps you may already use. See Robinhood vs Coinbase and Cash App and PayPal vs Coinbase.

Bitcoin-focused

Cash App is built around bitcoin, and in February 2026 it announced no-fee recurring bitcoin buys and no fee on larger one-time buys. If you only want bitcoin and plan to buy on a schedule, it's worth comparing with Coinbase's recurring buys. Our dollar-cost averaging guide explains the approach.

Multi-asset and other platforms

eToro US charges 1% per crypto buy and per sell and is available in most US states (eToro vs Coinbase). Uphold prices through its spread and lets you convert across asset types (Uphold vs Coinbase). Crypto.com has both an app and an exchange (Crypto.com vs Coinbase). Old names such as Bittrex, Poloniex and LocalBitcoins are gone or don't serve the US; see other exchanges vs Coinbase.

Self-custody

Every platform above holds your crypto for you by default. The truest alternative to an exchange is a wallet where you hold the keys: Coinbase's own separate Coinbase Wallet app, MetaMask, Exodus, or a Ledger hardware wallet. You'll still need an exchange or app to buy with dollars, but you can move coins out for storage. Start with our wallets guide.

How to buy bitcoin without Coinbase

  1. Pick a platform available in your state. Kraken, Gemini, Binance.US, Robinhood, Cash App and PayPal all sell bitcoin to US users, subject to state availability.
  2. Verify your identity. US-licensed platforms are required to verify customers; that's normal, not a red flag.
  3. Fund with a bank transfer if you can. Cards are usually the most expensive way to buy.
  4. Check the total on the preview screen. Compare how much bitcoin you get for the same dollar amount across apps.
  5. Decide where to store it. Leave it on the platform or withdraw to a wallet you control, sending a small test first.

Can you buy bitcoin cheaper than Coinbase?

Often, yes, but mostly by changing how you buy rather than where. Using an order book (Coinbase Advanced, Kraken Pro, Binance.US), paying by bank instead of card, placing limit orders and buying less often in larger amounts can all cut costs. Coinbase One subscriptions waive trading fees on simple trades up to plan limits, though the spread still applies. See limit vs stop orders.

Is there a Coinbase alternative that doesn't report to the IRS?

Not legitimately for US users. Crypto is treated as property for US tax purposes, and starting with the 2025 tax year, brokers including Coinbase issue Form 1099-DA reporting gross proceeds. US-licensed alternatives have the same obligations, and your tax liability exists whether or not a form is issued. See Coinbase taxes.

Bottom line

There's no single best Coinbase alternative, only the best fit for your reason for leaving. For fees, try an order book first; for simplicity, a payment or brokerage app; for control, a self-custody wallet. And remember the bigger lever: when you buy and sell usually matters more than which app you use.

Saving 0.3% on fees is easy to undo with one badly timed buy. If you want a structured way to think about entries and exits, our Cycle Code review looks at one approach.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Coinbase?

It depends on your goal. Kraken and Gemini are the closest regulated US exchanges; Kraken Pro and Binance.US for lower fees; Robinhood, Cash App or PayPal for simplicity; a self-custody wallet for holding your own keys.

What do Reddit users recommend as a Coinbase alternative?

Threads often suggest Kraken for fees and reliability and recommend moving long-term holdings to a hardware wallet. Older threads may mention exchanges that have since shut down or left the US, so check current status first.

Are there apps like Coinbase that give free crypto?

Promotions come and go. Coinbase ended its Learn and Earn rewards in May 2025. See free crypto and promos for what's real and which offers to avoid.

How do I buy ethereum or XRP without Coinbase?

The same way as bitcoin: choose a US-available exchange that lists the coin, verify, fund by bank transfer, and check the preview price. Coin availability varies by platform and state.

Is a Coinbase alternative safer?

Not automatically. Every custodial platform carries company risk, and crypto isn't FDIC-insured. Look at regulatory status, track record and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet.
