Coinbase vs Coinbase Wallet: What's the Difference?

Short answer: Coinbase is an exchange account: Coinbase holds your crypto and you log in to buy, sell and cash out. Coinbase Wallet is a separate self-custody app where you hold the keys, backed up by a recovery phrase, and use it to connect to on-chain apps. The wallet was renamed "Base app" in July 2025 and renamed back to Coinbase Wallet on September 10, 2026; it stayed self-custodial throughout.

The names cause most of the confusion. Inside the main Coinbase app, your balances are sometimes labeled as "wallets" (for example, a BTC wallet or USD wallet). Those are just balances in a custodial account, not Coinbase Wallet.

The name changes: Coinbase Wallet, Base app, Coinbase Wallet again

If you have searched for Coinbase Wallet in the past year and found "Base app" instead, you were not imagining it.

Through all three names the app remained self-custodial: you keep the keys. Reporting on the rename says the current app supports more than 10 networks and has added features such as perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks, some restricted by geography. Those are high-risk products; availability depends on where you live.

Coinbase Wallet review: strengths and weaknesses

Pros

  • You control the keys; Coinbase cannot freeze the wallet.
  • Easy transfers to and from a Coinbase account for people who already use the exchange.
  • Connects to decentralized apps on Base, Ethereum and other supported networks.
  • Familiar brand and design for Coinbase users.

Cons

  • No account recovery: lose your recovery phrase and device and the funds are gone.
  • Not every coin on the exchange is supported; Coinbase's help center lists Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash as unsupported.
  • On-chain transactions carry network fees, and swaps may carry an extra fee.
  • It is a hot wallet on a connected device, so it is more exposed than a hardware wallet.
  • Frequent rebrands and feature changes can be confusing.

Is Coinbase Wallet free?

Downloading and creating a wallet costs nothing. You pay network fees whenever you send, swap or interact with an app on-chain, and those go to the blockchain's validators or miners, not to Coinbase. Swaps inside the wallet may also include a service fee. The exact cost is shown on the confirmation screen before you approve, so read it each time. For fees on the exchange side, see our Coinbase fees guide.

Coinbase Vault vs wallet: what happened to Vault?

Coinbase Vault was a feature inside the custodial Coinbase account, not a separate wallet. It added friction on purpose: withdrawals from a standard Vault historically required email approvals and a 48-hour waiting period, which gave you time to cancel if someone broke into your account. Multisignature vaults, where you held one of the keys, were discontinued on April 19, 2018.

The key point for "Vault vs wallet" comparisons: a Vault was still custodial. Coinbase held the keys; the delay only protected against an attacker draining your account quickly. Coinbase Wallet and hardware wallets are self-custody. If Vault is offered in your account today, check its current terms in the app, as we could not confirm its current availability. If you want time-delayed protection with self-custody, a hardware wallet is the usual answer; compare options on our Exodus, Ledger and Electrum page.

How to download Coinbase Wallet safely

  1. Start from the official source. Go to coinbase.com/wallet or use the link from Coinbase's official site to the App Store, Google Play or the Chrome Web Store. Fake wallet apps and extensions are common.
  2. Check the publisher name. If the listing still shows "Base" during the transition, confirm it is published by Coinbase.
  3. Create a new wallet and write down the recovery phrase. On paper, offline, stored somewhere safe. Never photograph it or type it into a website.
  4. Send a small test amount from your Coinbase account, choosing the same network the wallet's receive address uses.
  5. Then move the rest, keeping in mind any hold on recently bank-funded purchases. Our withdraw and send guide covers the send screen step by step.

Which should you use?

Use the Coinbase exchange app if you mainly buy, sell and cash out to a bank, or you are new and want account recovery. Add Coinbase Wallet if you want to hold your own keys or use decentralized apps. If you are weighing Coinbase Wallet against the most popular alternative, read MetaMask vs Coinbase Wallet. Whichever app holds your coins, the bigger driver of results is usually when you buy and sell, not where you store. Our guide to crypto market cycles explains why.

Bottom line

Coinbase and Coinbase Wallet are two different products from the same company: one is a custodial exchange account, the other a self-custody wallet you control. The wallet's brief life as the "Base app" did not change how it works. Pick based on whether you want Coinbase to hold the keys or to hold them yourself.

FAQ

Do I need a Coinbase account to use Coinbase Wallet?

No. You can create a Coinbase Wallet without an exchange account. Linking one makes moving funds between them easier.

Is the Base app the same as Coinbase Wallet?

Yes. Coinbase Wallet was renamed Base app in July 2025 and renamed back to Coinbase Wallet on September 10, 2026. Base itself is also the name of Coinbase's layer-2 blockchain.

Can Coinbase freeze my Coinbase Wallet?

Coinbase does not hold the keys to a self-custody wallet, so it cannot move or freeze funds on the blockchain. Some in-app features may be restricted by region.

Can I store Litecoin or Bitcoin Cash in Coinbase Wallet?

Coinbase's help center lists them as unsupported in the wallet. Keep them on the exchange or use a wallet that supports those networks.

Which is safer, Coinbase or Coinbase Wallet?

They have different risks. The exchange carries company and account risk but offers recovery. The wallet removes company control but makes you responsible for the recovery phrase and for spotting scams.
