Why People Buy High and Sell Low (and How to Stop)

Short answer: People buy after prices have already soared because rising prices feel safe and exciting (FOMO). They sell after crashes because falling prices feel dangerous (panic). The fix isn't willpower. It's deciding your buy and sell rules before emotions kick in, then letting the rules decide.

The cycle of emotions

Think of a typical boom and bust. Early in a rally, most people are skeptical. As prices climb, skepticism turns into hope, then excitement, then the feeling that everyone else is getting rich. That's often when new money pours in. When prices turn down, people tell themselves it's a dip, then feel anxious and fearful, and finally sell in a panic, often close to the bottom. Then prices drift sideways and many swear off crypto, just before the next recovery.

Why our brains do this

How it shows up in crypto

Searches for "how to buy" a coin tend to spike after big price jumps, not before. Meme coins such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu have shown this pattern clearly: huge interest near their peaks, followed by long declines. The same thing happened with crypto lenders offering high yields before BlockFi and Voyager collapsed.

Guardrails that actually help

  1. Write your rules before you buy. How much, how often, and what would make you take profits or stop buying.
  2. Automate the boring part. Recurring buys remove the urge to "wait for a better price." See dollar-cost averaging.
  3. Use limit orders, not market panic. Decide prices calmly in advance. See limit vs stop orders.
  4. Take profits in stages. Selling 10–20% into big rallies by rule beats hoping to sell the exact top.
  5. Check less often. Turn off price alerts you don't need, and review weekly instead.
  6. Use an objective signal. A predefined, rules-based signal gives you something other than your feelings to follow.

FAQ

Why do I always buy at the top?

Because the top is when an asset gets the most attention and feels the safest to buy. Deciding in advance, and buying on a schedule or a signal rather than on headlines, breaks that link.

Should I sell when crypto crashes?

We can't give personal advice. Selling because of panic, without a pre-set rule, has historically locked in losses for many investors. If you'd be forced to sell in a crash, you may have invested more than you can afford to risk.

Is it bad to check prices every day?

Not by itself, but frequent checking tends to increase emotional trading. Many long-term investors review weekly or monthly.
