MetaMask vs Coinbase Wallet: Which Self-Custody Wallet Fits You?

Short answer: MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet are both free, self-custody hot wallets where you hold the keys. MetaMask, built by Consensys, is the long-standing default for Ethereum and EVM-compatible apps. Coinbase Wallet is the better fit if you already use a Coinbase account and want easy transfers between the two. Neither is a Coinbase exchange account, and both make you responsible for your recovery phrase.

Where MetaMask is stronger

Where Coinbase Wallet is stronger

Coinbase Wallet had a turbulent naming history: it was renamed "Base app" in July 2025 and renamed back on September 10, 2026. Details are on our Coinbase vs Coinbase Wallet page.

Security: about the same model, same main risks

Both are hot wallets: keys live on your phone or computer. That means the biggest risks are the same for both:

For larger amounts, both wallets can be paired with a hardware wallet so transactions must be approved on a separate device. See our Ledger, Exodus and Electrum comparison.

MetaMask vs Coinbase (the exchange)

Some people search "Coinbase vs MetaMask" meaning the exchange, not the wallet. They do different jobs. Coinbase is a custodial exchange where you buy crypto with dollars and cash out to a bank. MetaMask is a wallet: it holds crypto you already own and connects to on-chain apps. A common setup is to buy on Coinbase, then send to MetaMask. Exchange fees are covered in our Coinbase fees guide.

How to send ETH from Coinbase to MetaMask

  1. Copy your MetaMask address. Open MetaMask, make sure the correct network is selected (for example Ethereum mainnet or Base) and copy the account address.
  2. Start a send in Coinbase. Choose ETH (or the token), paste the address and select the same network your MetaMask is set to. A network mismatch is the most common way people "lose" funds.
  3. Check for holds. If you just bought with a bank transfer, Coinbase may hold the funds before they can leave the platform.
  4. Review the network fee shown before you confirm, then send a small test first.
  5. Confirm arrival in MetaMask, then send the rest. If a token does not appear, you may need to add it to MetaMask's token list; the funds are still on-chain.

Full details, including address checks and on-chain vs off-chain sends, are in our withdraw and send guide.

Which should you choose?

Pick MetaMask if you mostly use Ethereum and EVM apps on desktop and want a wallet independent of any exchange. Pick Coinbase Wallet if you already use Coinbase and want the simplest path between your account and a self-custody wallet. Plenty of people install both. Either way, the real decision that comes first is whether you want self-custody at all; our wallets hub covers that trade-off.

Bottom line

Same custody model, similar risks, different strengths: MetaMask for EVM breadth and independence, Coinbase Wallet for Coinbase integration and a multichain app. Choose the one you'll use carefully, guard the recovery phrase, and add a hardware wallet for amounts you can't afford to lose.

FAQ

Is MetaMask safer than Coinbase Wallet?

Neither is clearly safer. Both are self-custody hot wallets, so your habits (protecting the recovery phrase, avoiding phishing, checking approvals) matter more than the app.

Can I import my MetaMask wallet into Coinbase Wallet?

Generally yes: wallets that follow the same standards can restore from the same recovery phrase. Only enter the phrase into the official app you installed yourself, never into a website.

Why can't I buy crypto in MetaMask with my Coinbase account?

MetaMask is not connected to Coinbase's exchange. Buy on Coinbase, then send the crypto to your MetaMask address on the correct network.

Are MetaMask fees higher than Coinbase?

They charge different things. Sending from MetaMask costs a network fee; built-in swaps add a service fee. Coinbase charges trading fees and a spread on simple buys. Compare the exact figures on each confirmation screen.
